There are very few hard and fast rules when it comes to weaning and that can make the whole process even more stressful than it should be. Here are our suggestions and some useful links that other parents have found helpful.At around 6 months your baby will be able to sit and hold their head steady, co-ordinate their eyes hands and mouth; and swallow food. When all of those skills are in place your baby is ready for food. Don’t believe anyone who says that solid food will help a baby sleep through the night – it won’t! Milk is highly nutritious and calorific and will keep your baby going longer than a bit of mashed carrot but it is important to get them started on food at 6 months as their reserves of essential nutrients begins to be depleted.

At first, it really doesn’t matter how much food a baby actually swallows as they still get nearly all of their nutrition from milk. Let your baby get used to feeding by allowing them to play with their food and offer a few teaspoons, once a day, gradually increasing the amount. Whatever you do try and keep it fun and light-hearted – easier said than done! At around 8-9 months your baby will move towards eating 3 meals a day.
Keep giving your baby milk and start off with just one ingredient – sweet potato is a good first food. Some people like to give their baby just one food for a few days before introducing a new one so that they can isolate the cause of any reactions. Avoid all the allergens (like dairy, nuts, wheat, fish etc.) in babies younger than 6 months and only introduce cow’s milk as a drink and honey after 12 months. Don’t forget to offer your baby water with meals.
